Mick Quarrell and Phil Smurthwaite are The Billy Tea Bush Band!
They’ve performed together for over 25 years and played at almost every occasion you could imagine – school bush dances, weddings, corporate events, festivals, pubs, parties, Australia Day celebrations – spreading their wisdom that a good ol’ bush dance is a fool-proof way for people of all ages, abilities and walks of life to break the ice, let down their hair and have a great time!
Mick is quite simply a born entertainer, adept at gently teasing and cajoling his audience from a group of shy strangers into having a rollicking good time. He plays guitar, lager-phone and stomp box, sings the songs and, most importantly, calls the dances with the finesse born from calling literally thousands of them. His eyes light up as he describes his audiences, “I just love to see the twinkle in their eyes as they let down their guard and become part of the fun”.
Phil is a skilled musician with a strong background in music study, education and performance. He plays the fiddle that brings the show to life, reflecting the Celtic roots of Australian bush music and giving the Billy Tea Bush band its authentic sound.
Together, their performances demonstrate a professionalism and camaraderie born from over two decades of shared friendship and experience.
